The history of Carla Zampatti and the Australian Multicultural Foundation

A shared commitment to multicultural Australia - the origins of a legacy

Carla Zampatti AC arrived in Australia in the 1960s with her family from a small town in the Italian Alps, settling in regional Western Australia before moving to Sydney to pursue her ambitions. There, she built a career defined by resilience, creativity, and independence, navigating structural barriers that limited women’s access to opportunity and business ownership.

She went on to become one of Australia’s most influential designers, business leaders, and cultural figures, and a lifelong advocate for women and multicultural communities. Her leadership was grounded in the belief that opportunity, visibility, and belonging are essential for women to succeed.

Carla’s relationship with the Australian Multicultural Foundation (AMF) was both personal and enduring. She served on the AMF Board for ten years and shared its vision of Australia as one people drawn from many cultures. Reflecting on AMF’s work, she said, “It struck me how engaged the AMF was with the wider community… helping people feel a sense of belonging.”

Following Carla’s passing in 2021, AMF established the Australian Multicultural Foundation Carla Zampatti Scholarship for Young Women in partnership with the Carla Zampatti Foundation in 2022. The scholarship provides an annual $10,000 award and tailored support for women pursuing leadership across business, creative industries, education, sport, and community. In its first two years, it received more than 150 applications and supported nine women.

In Her Name is the evolution of that scholarship, expanding Carla’s legacy into a national platform that creates pathways, community, and visibility for the next generation of women to lead.

A national organisation championing inclusion, belonging and social cohesion.

The Australian Multicultural Foundation (AMF) believes Australia’s cultural diversity is a core strength and that social cohesion is built through understanding and connection. For over 30 years, AMF has promoted inclusion and strong community relationships through education, leadership, dialogue and research, empowering people from all backgrounds to contribute to Australia’s social and civic life. This philosophy underpins In Her Name.

Delivered by the AMF, In Her Name extends AMF’s long-standing commitment to equity and representation into a focused platform for women. It reflects a shared drive to not only support women financially, but to amplify their voices, validate their ambitions and expand their visibility as leaders.

Together, AMF and In Her Name create an ecosystem of opportunity — connecting women to networks, mentorship, platforms and partnerships that enable them to forge their own paths and lead on their own terms.

In Her Name is a natural evolution of AMF’s mission: building social cohesion by investing in leadership, strengthening community, and ensuring the future of Australia reflects the full diversity of its people.

Katrina Scaramella

Director, In Her Name

Katrina Scaramella leads In Her Name with conviction shaped by lived experience.

Her journey with the Australian Multicultural Foundation began in 2016 as part of its Youth Leadership Program. In 2021, she returned to AMF as Project, Research and Training Manager, working closely with young people and multicultural communities across Australia. In that work, she saw something clearly: the talent was there. The opportunity was not.

In 2022, she helped shape the Australian Multicultural Foundation Carla Zampatti Scholarship for Young Women into what is now In Her Name. In 2025, she became Director and is now leading the platform she helped build.

Her work sits at the intersection of gender equity, youth empowerment, and multicultural leadership. With a background in international relations and public policy, she brings strategic insight and lived understanding to her leadership.

For Katrina, creating In Her Name has been deeply personal. As a young woman herself, building a national platform that creates real pathways for others is both a responsibility and a privilege. She is driven by collaboration, by bold thinking, and by the belief that when women are backed early, they don’t just rise, they expand what is possible for everyone.
